Assata Shakur was a prominent Black Panther Party and Black Liberation Army member, activist, & author who became an iconic figure in revolutionary,anti-racist, & Black liberation movements. Assata Led the BPP chapter in Harlem, coordinating community programs like the Free Breakfast for the children and Free health clinics for the people. in 1973 Shakur was wounded, arrested, & wrongfully convicted for the killing of a New Jersey state trooper, dispite lack of evidence! specifically, no-gunpowder residue on her hands & a politically charged prosecution.
Assata was sentenced to life in 1977, but escaped prison in 1979 with the help of Mutulu Shakur & Marilyn Buck. After living underground for several years, she was smuggled into Cuba where she was granted political asylum in 1984, Assata Shakur was labeled a victim of «the fierce repression against the Black movement in the U.S" Shakur was "a true political prisoner." & a true revolutionary! She remained in Cuba where she lived FREE until her death on September 25, 2025.
